A Day on Smith Lake at The Poor Man Poker Run – Bailey Custom Boats
Lewis Smith Lake is a beautiful place to boat, and this summer, it was the scene of the annual Poor Man Poker Run. We took our Bailey Custom Boats out and had the opportunity to get some fresh air while spending time with family and meeting a great local community. The scenery was gorgeous, and the weather was perfect for boating. It was a great day to spend on the water!
Smith Lake is a 22,000-acre man-made reservoir located in northwest Alabama. The lake is known for its clear water and scenic views. Pontoon boats are popular on Smith Lake because they are easy to maneuver and provide a great platform for enjoying the scenery.
What is the Poor Man Poker Run?
The Smith Lake Poor Man Poker Run is a boating event hosted by Alabama Lakewide Charity. Their goal is to raise money for area search & recovery efforts, and local charities.
Participants take their boats out on the lake and collect cards at various decorated docks hosted by local businesses. At each dock, boaters are greeted not only with a playing card but also with various treats such as bottled water, koozies, frisbees, hotdogs, and even delicious homemade ice cream. One dock made sure the doggie co-captains were not left out by gifting each one with a treat bag of goodies just for them!
The object of the game is to have the best hand at the end of the day. But everyone feels like a winner after spending the day soaking up the sun and having a whole lot of fun!
After a run on the lake, the Trident Marina hosted the after-party, where we enjoyed some great music from local bands and delicious food and cocktails. This was a great opportunity to meet some fellow boaters who share our love for boating and family fun on the lake.
Poker-run events like this are a great way to enjoy Smith Lake and give back to the community. We were happy to be able to participate and support such a worthy cause. We can’t wait to do it again next year!
Places We Visited on Lewis Smith Lake
The Poker Run was great, but we also had an excellent time visiting the local marinas and bridges on Smith Lake. One of our favorite stops was at Rock Creek Marina, where they gave us a baby bottle filled with cracker crumbs to feed the fish! It’s such a simple thing that made everyone in our group smile – especially if you have kids. You’ll find two gorgeous bridges on the water, Big Bridge and Duncan Bridge, both next to marinas that will make sure you are ready for a day on the water. Lake smith is also a great place to get some amazing nature photos
Overall, this was one of our favorite lakes to visit this summer. Beautiful rocks with clear water and plenty of wildlife will capture your eye. Though we had a blast cruising from dock to dock during The Poor Man’s Poker Run, with over 642 miles of shoreline, there are so many sites to be seen and hidden gems to explore on this beautiful lake. We loved Smith lake, and I have a feeling it will become one of our family’s go-to lakes!
Stay tuned to hear about the summer we had visiting lakes all across the Southeast region. We had the opportunity to visit some beautiful lakes and meet some wonderful local businesses and residents.
